Wow! Life with a sensory kid has become so much more manageable. Don’t get me wrong, he is very much still a sensory kid. But all of that is understandable and workable. This week all the kids started camp at the YMCA. It is a day camp, the theme this week is “splash”,and they just play games all day. We dropped them off at 9. I got a call at 10:30. Apparently Charlie didn’t want to wear his shoes. They were ‘mushy’. Well, they have to wear shoes! They are running around outside. So the tete-a-tete with the counselor began. As soon as I got there, I realized that Charlie’s shoes were wet, showed him that he had another pair in his backpack, changed them, explained to the counselor that he is a little idiosyncratic about some things, and off he went to join everyone at camp. No time outs, no arguments. He even did the craft. Wow!
Did I even think this was possible a year ago? Absolutely not. But here we are, a lot less stress, a lot less mess. Horray!
Next test, fireworks at the 4th of July. Usually we can only stay for about half before they become overwhelming. It seems that he enjoys looking at them but the sounds are too much.
